Boston event to honor male pro-choice allies

NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts will host its second annual “Men for Choice” event from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 24 at MAST’ Restaurant, 45 Province St., Boston. This year, State Rep. Harold Naughton Jr., D-Worcester, will be honored alongside pro-choice advocate Mac D’Alessandro for their work to advance reproductive freedom in Massachusetts.

In 2014, Naughton fought for the passage of Massachusetts’ anti-shackling law, which prohibits pregnant women from being shackled, particularly when giving birth.

“I’ve worked hard to bring equal rights to women in our state, and I was proud to work with NARAL in passing the anti-shackling law and ending this inhumane practice,” said Naughton. “I am honored to be recognized by NARAL and look forward to continuing to work with them to protect the health, safety, and dignity of every woman.”

D’Alessandro has also worked to achieve reproductive freedom in Massachusetts. In 2010, he challenged anti-choice U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch, D-Mass., in the ninth Congressional District. “I was honored to have my candidacy
endorsed by NARAL,” D’Alessandro said. “I look forward to continuing the fight for reproductive justice.”

NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts Executive Director Megan Amundson sees the  event as a way to recognize the role men can play in advancing NARAL’s vision. “The decision to start a family, and all of the health care decisions that go into planning our families, isn’t just about women,” said Amundson. “Men across the Commonwealth are allies for reproductive rights every day, so creating a space to honor them is an opportunity to recognize that reproductive justice is a family issue and a community issue. With the help of allies like Rep. Harold Naughton and Mac D’Alessandro, we have achieved significant victories for women’s health in Massachusetts.
